New Association Seeks Better Cooperation Between ITU and U.S. Telecom Sector

The dynamic growth of communications and information services has put increasing pressures on industry and international organizations to develop new effective global standards, to find sufficient spectrum and to deploy these advanced communications services in developing markets. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU), a United Nations affiliated organization, is at the center of the decision-making process on how to meet these new market demands. As such, it too is undergoing its own program of review and reform of its structure and mission.

Marketplace changes and the importance of the ITU to private industry for the development of global standards and the use of spectrum resources have created a compelling need for the United States telecom industry to form its own organization to better meet these challenges. Thus, the United States-ITU Association (USITUA) was officially organized, with a founding membership of 52 organizations, which include telecom equipment manufacturers, service providers, software companies, law firms and communications associations. TIA is secretariat of the new association.

USITUA is an open U.S. industry forum for discussion of issues and development of views and proposals on ITU policy matters. Its mission is to create consensus private-sector views on such ITU matters and communicate those views to the U.S. government.

The newly created association will focus on matters of policy and procedure affecting private-sector preparation for and participation in ITU meetings and conferences. USITUA will work to improve coordination and cooperation between the private sector and the U.S. government to enhance U.S. effectiveness in the ITU. It will promote adoption and implementation of ITU decisions, agreements and treaties to advance U.S. interests in telecommunications.

We look forward to working with the other members of USITUA to address - and resolve - issues that will help speed the development of a truly global communications network.
