TIA Member Spotlight:

TIA welcomes one of its newest members, Bivio Networks!

Bivio Networks has developed a family of industry-leading, deep packet inspection and processing platforms that combine unparalleled scaling of network performance, processing power and application agility. Bivio's network appliance platforms feature a groundbreaking architecture specifically optimized for wire-speed execution of emerging network services that increasingly demand deep packet processing combined with high network throughput. Based on open industry standards, Bivio Networks fuses unmatched flexibility with uncompromising performance to enable its customers to overcome existing bottlenecks and deliver the foundation of the next-generation network infrastructure. Headquartered in Pleasanton, Calif., with sales offices in San Mateo, Calif., Washington, D.C., the United Kingdom and Japan, Bivio Networks is backed by Goldman Sachs, InterWest Partners, Storm Ventures, Venrock Associates, and Silver Creek Ventures.

Dr. Elan Amir, CTO Bivio Networks, brings broad technology and leadership experience in the networking industry to Bivio. Dr. Amir joined Bivio Networks in 2003 as CTO. Before joining Bivio Networks, he served as CTO for OmniSky Corporation, one of the pioneers in the wireless data application, software and services sectors. Dr. Amir oversaw all aspects of the company’s technology development, its direction and strategy, intellectual property development, and merger and acquisition due diligence.

Prior to OmniSky, Dr. Amir was CTO and vice president of engineering at ProxiNet, one of the first developers of web browsing solutions for mobile devices. ProxiNet was acquired by Puma Technology (now Intellisync Corporation) in 1999. Before ProxiNet, Dr. Amir co-founded FastForward Networks, a developer of broadcast media distribution software. FastForward Networks was acquired by Inktomi Corporation in August 2000.

Dr. Amir received his Ph.D. and MS in computer science and a BS in electrical engineering and computer science from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Amir spoke with TIA Network staff to tell us more about the organization.

Please tell us about Bivio Networks' products and solutions.

Bivio’s family of deep packet inspection and processing network appliance platforms, the Bivio 7000 Series and the Bivio 2000 are high-performance, programmable network devices that combine a groundbreaking scalable hardware architecture with a software platform that includes a standard Linux-based execution environment and a comprehensive set of networking features. By fusing flexible computing and high-speed networking, Bivio’s unique Network Appliance Platforms are changing the way networking products are built. Companies developing and deploying emerging deep packet processing applications on Bivio devices achieve dramatic increases in performance while significantly reducing their product development costs and time-to-market, making the Bivio 7000 Series and the Bivio 2000 the ideal Network Appliance Platforms for a wide range of emerging network infrastructure solutions, such as security, traffic management, application acceleration, VoIP and mobility applications.

The Bivio 7000 Series of Network Appliance Platforms is a family of compact, extremely high-performance, and fully programmable network appliances that combine a unique packet processing hardware architecture with a software platform that includes a standard Linux-based execution environment and a comprehensive set of networking features. Designed specifically to provide wire speed deep packet processing, the Bivio 7000 Series architecture fuses Network Processing components with Application Processing CPUs to deliver uncompromising performance and unmatched flexibility. The platform family includes two main product groups that provide performance optimized features to deliver true line rate packet processing from 3 Gbps through 10 Gbps throughput.

The Bivio 7000 Series platforms are fully programmable systems that allow any Linux-based networking application to run on the appliance with little or no porting effort. By basing the platforms on a standard, pre-ported Linux distribution with full API compatibility, software developers can quickly and easily run applications within hours of unpacking the device. A rich set of software infrastructure components further allows developers to quickly realize advanced capabilities of the platform including robust traffic management, load distribution across the multiple Application Processor CPUs, high availability and system management integration.

Bivio Networks provides many intelligence reports in the form of research, white papers, case studies, Webinars and analyst reports. How do your customers benefit from these reports?

Bivio currently offers a variety of white papers, Webinars and reports for both federal and commercial markets. The Bivio 7000 and Bivio 2000 white papers have been especially helpful in providing customers with an opportunity to understand how next-generation deep packet inspection networking platforms are changing the way CTOs and network operations managers are deploying applications on the network. The white papers available today from Bivio demonstrate how deploying deep packet processing network applications on Bivio’s network appliance helps to achieve dramatic increases in performance of networking applications while also providing significant savings in network operations and R & D costs.

Webcasts with partners such as RMI and NFR Security (recently acquired by Check Point Software Technologies) allow customers to see first-hand how DPI applications can be developed and deployed on the Bivio platform with ease, and give a successful overview of the Bivio network appliance and its capabilities to partner companies.

Bivio brings together innovative hardware and software vendors to deliver enhanced networking solutions on Bivio’s award-winning Network Appliance Platform. Please describe these two broad categories of partners: Platform Partners and Ecosystem Partners.

Platform Partners provide technology that is tightly integrated into the Bivio core platform – they are typically innovative leaders in their respective fields. Bivio takes advantage of their technology leadership and, in conjunction with Bivio’s hardware and software expertise, delivers the Bivio Network Appliance Platform for the Software Driven Network.

What value do you gain from your TIA membership?

We have been very pleased with our TIA membership opportunities to date. At NXTComm in 2007, we had the chance to meet several leading telecom organizations as well as talk with key contacts that will become future Bivio customers and partners. Our TIA membership has already brought Bivio some significant relationship opportunities, in addition to providing a great community of telecom leaders that can provide valuable input into Bivio’s technology innovations.
